Session: The Art of Marketing
Ryan Townend has spent his life in pursuit of entrepreneurship. He discovered his business sense, coupled with creativity, during his childhood years. He later refined this business acumen at the University of Saskatchewan at the College of Commerce. His early marketing days were spent in marketing at the Saskatoon Forestry Farm Park and Zoo, where he was to apply his talents in a not-for-profit setting.
Fifteen years ago, Ryan founded William Joseph with the goal of creating an advertising agency that would incorporate smart strategy to provide the base for innovative and on-the-mark creative – he has achieved this and more. Ryan has highly honed marketing instincts and is able to see the right solutions to problems almost immediately. He is an active community member always giving back to charity and making a bold impression wherever he goes.

Nancy Smith loves to help people understand and develop strategies for social media. As an early adopter and avid social media user, it has been a natural transition for her to apply knowledge from her marketing career to assist brands such as Travel Alberta, The Calgary Stampede, Sport Chek, Samsung and Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.
As a passionate advocate for social media, Nancy currently teaches at two universities - the University of Calgary and Mount Royal University and at Bow Valley College. Nancy is also an acclaimed speaker, having over 15 years’ experience in providing workshops and sessions at large-scale conferences dealing with issues and strategies related to social media.

Michael Kerr is a Technology Development Advisor for at Alberta Innovates located in Calgary. As a Technology Development Advisor, Michael provides assistance to companies innovating with either new products or processes (from patents, prototype development, process improvement or business advice). For newer firms, support includes one-on-one expertise for both technical help and business strategy, including managing cash flow. He is able to help firms access funding support to develop their ideas.
Michael’s background includes a degree in Chemistry, Masters in Business Administration and most recently attained his Certified Management Consulting designation. He spent several years involved in chemical processing as well as 22 years in advising innovative SMEs for the Federal and now Provincial Governments.
Michael has also been a part time instructor at 3 post-secondary institutions, teaching at the undergraduate and Master’s level in marketing, operations, entrepreneurship, corporate social responsibility and process control math. He has just started as a part time instructor at Mount Royal University for New Ventures Course.

For more than 25 years Jeff has worked to continue to modernize the way we communicate and educate in corporate environments. With that longevity, he has had to constantly evolve with the times. From low-tech and offline solutions, to digital online technology, and now to the modern connected workforce, he is always focused on solutions and results. Jeff’s belief is that integrating strategic thinking and visual storytelling into the creation of educational content creates a more engaged blended visual learning experience.
As an early adopter and lifetime entrepreneur, it was Jeff’s interest in cannabis legalization that lead to the creation of the Cannabis Learning Series in late 2017. Now Jeff and his team of advisors actively engage and educate employers on the impact cannabis legalization will have on the workplace.

As a Senior EHS Advisor, Kym has over 27 years’ experience in environment, sustainability, health and safety, regulatory compliance/permitting, stakeholder engagement/Indigenous affairs and community relations and investment. She began her career as an environmental consultant in 1991 with Golder Associates and transitioned to the oil & gas industry in 2006. Kym has held several previous leadership roles at Golder Associates, EnCana, ConocoPhillips and Enerplus. Most recently, Kym was the Senior Manager of Safety and Social Responsibility (S&SR) at Enerplus Corporation where she provided leadership and oversaw activities pertaining to health, safety, environment, sustainability (HSE&SD), stakeholder engagement and regulatory compliance.
Kym has significant experience with Cannabis legislation and resulting corporate due diligence in both the United States and Canada.

A 30 year veteran of the print industry, Gary is a passionate and innovative small business owner; successfully running his own printing company since 2009. Gary always strives to keep his business at the forefront of technology and supports his team of over 30 people to become leaders in their fields of expertise.
Gary’s passion was inherited from his Grandfather who owned a print shop in Saskatchewan. You could say he has have ink in his blood. Gary began working on the production floor of a small print shop during high school. Since then he has taken on just about every role, from Press Operator to Production Manager to Sales Representative. When he says he’s seen it all, he means it. Gary’s hands-on experience and knowledge makes him great at finding the right solutions to tricky problems.
With a knack for marketing and how to use print creatively, Gary has become well versed in the art of connecting with local audiences through print marketing. If your project seems impossible, Gary is the guy to talk to. He’ll figure out a way to make it happen.

Craigery is an award winning cinematographer, creative director, and co-founder of Not a Robot Studios located in Calgary, Alberta. As an artist, he finds the craft of filmmaking super rewarding -enjoying the challenges of blending story, visuals, light and music together to create pieces that connect and move audiences.
"Always explore, innovate and learn” is a good way to describe Craigery’s motivation for his craft and business building. He's had the privilege of travelling all over Alberta and beyond, filming people, places and stories. His 15+ years of experience in the video industry has given him a wealth of experience that Craigery enjoys teaching to others through various workshops and seminars.
